2009 Niepoort Douro Redoma - Portugal, Douro (1/14/2013)
-- decanted for 1 hour before initial taste --
-- tasted non-blind over 4 days --
NOSE: ripe; juicy purple berries; a touch floral; medium+ expressiveness; high-toned orange note; tightened-up 2.5 hours after opening. Still tight on Day 2, 23 hours after opening. DAY 4: medium to medium+ expressiveness; deep red/black fruits; hints of spice and savory seared roast beef.
BODY: violet-garnet color of medium-deep depth; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: red/purple fruits; based on the Nose, I was expecting this to be very fruity, and perhaps a touch over-ripe/concentrated, but that it is not the case; moderate rocky/mineral note; good acidity; alc. is not noticeable; seemed to close-up about 2.5 hours after opening; fine to medium-fine tannins give some mid-palate grip. DAY 2: still tight and somewhat tannic; a touch spicy. DAY 3: still tight. DAY 4: finally starting to unfurl --- still has mineral; juicy red fruit; good acidity; still reserved and tight. I admit, I was nervous to string this out over five days, so I drank all of the remainder on Day 4. This wine absolutely should not be approached right now.
