For The Love Of Port

The 2011 Vintage Ports have been out for a bit now and many people have had the opportunity to try at least some of them. From what you've personally tasted so far, what are your favorites?

(It's the only one I've tasted. )

I really need to try more of them, though, as the Taylor we had at the vertical you hosted in LA was superb.

From the planning it sounds like we have plenty of Port and not that many tasters, so I doubt we're going to need to open any more bottles. I fly back on Sunday so don't even have that much time the next day to "finish off" bottles, so I'd rather keep them sealed so that I can bring them home.

Of course, if we're short on Port and still feeling thirsty, then I'm perfectly happy to try a Quevedo or GST.

Ah... thought we had 10 people and 12 Ports. Had it stuck in my head that we had the '48 and '92.

Wow, to read that Jeff put the Quevedo and Dow 2011 VP as tied in his placements of the vintage ... certainly woke me up in a hurry.

Could you elaborate on what kind of mood you find fits each of the two ports mentioned above?

I bought a bunch, but I bought sixers and can't see cracking those quite yet. I need to pick up a few odd bottles when they show up locally, which hopefully they will do. I bought of few halves of 2009. Maybe I should get some 2011 halves too.

As with any young ports, it's certainly more of a scientific guess on how well they might mature, so I won't make a claim to that.

in terms of pop and pouring which i did 2 months ago, the two ports are surprisingly not as sweet compared to the other 2011 houses.

The quevedo is more lithe and the dow has a more spicy component. The analogy for me is that i'd do the quevedo as an apertif and the dow as an after dinner drink.

So roy, does one need to subscribe to see what you thought of them? =)

We tried both the fonseca and the dow over christmas. It was a split decision in my family, my dad and I liked the elegance of the fonseca, but my brothers liked how powerful the dow seemed. It will be interesting how these guys age. They were both fantastic.

Yup, trying these side by side again as they age to see how they flesh out and compare down the road will be the fun part
