1994 Quinta Do Noval VP

Post by John B »

Dear all,

I do feel odd asking questions without knowing any of you, so I request that you please bear with me if my etiquette is not correct.

I bought a bottle of Noval '94 VP 2 years ago for £40.

I am nervous about drinking it as I have no experience of drinking young VP.

Is this considered young (my gut says yes) ?

Would I be better off laying this down for a while ?

I suspect this was cheap, am I correct ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

John,

Welcome to the site, great to have you and our motto here is "There is no such thing as a dumb question" so feel free to ask as many questions as you want. As to your questions:

A very nice bottle and a decent price for buying it only 2 years ago.

Yes, it is very young still and if you have the means to store it correctly, it will last for 20+ years no problem...and be much better 20 years from now. But, nothing wrong with enjoying them young too, whatever you prefer. But I would recommend laying this down for some time.

You have a great port there - the Noval '94 is a wonderful port. It will be fabulous if you open it today, with at least 6 hours in the decanter before you drink it.

It will be even better in 20 years time if you have space to be able to store it somewhere cool and dark.

And you are very welcome here at FTLOP. Its the perfect place to come to ask questions like the one that you have asked.

Hi John,

Welcome to For The Love Of Port's Forum area. We not only don't mind questions from those looking to learn (aren't we all!?!?!?) but we thrive on helping. In fact, we have an entire area of the website's Forum dedicated to this exact purpose, called PORT BASICS Forum. Please have a look:
http://www.fortheloveofport.com/ftlopfo ... um.php?f=7

As to your question, Andy & Alex have done a great job in providing their collective Port wisdom, so I can only add:

My four year old daughter does not consider the 1994 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port as young. Nor is it a bottle that most of us would consider cheap. I believe that anyone reading this, would be very proud to have a bottle ... preferably a case ... of the 1994 Noval in their collection.

Please continue to post and we look forward to seeing more of you here when you have time to revisit!

Best regards and again, welcome aboard!

Roy
