RH: Outside of the fact that K&L uses tasting notes from 1989 and 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2000 from a variety of sources, with a few more modern TNs too, there are a few good Ports being sold here:

Please note this is a mixture of in-stock items and special order selections as well. Please see the item page for specific inventory information and arrival dates.

1977 Dow's Vintage Port ($149.90)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977.The 1977, still a baby, is fabulously scented, very rich and concentrated, and has a potential longevity of at least another 30-50 years." (01/1989)

92 points Wine Spectator: "Medium brick-red. Aromas of coffee, prune and milk chocolate. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a licorice, berry, custard and cream character. Firm and racy. Long and delicious. Firm and beautiful. Just ready now. '77/'85/'97 blind Port retrospective. Best from 2008 through 2016. (Web-2008)"

K&L Notes: 94 points Richard Jennings: "Dark garnet red color; rich berry, black cherry, black plum nose; youthful, black cherry, berry, blackberry, tart black fruit, fig, tart berry palate; long finish." (8/27/2011, RJonWine.com)

1983 Dow's Vintage Port ($119.99)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977. The 1983 is rich, concentrated, very fruity, and magnificently perfumed, suggesting that it is going to mature early, long before the 1977." (01/1989)

Jancis Robinson: "Mid crimson and slightly grey. Very sweet and round and slightly raisiny. Slight rustic edge but very ripe and round and lively with a certain freshness and punch. Long and powerful. Looking good for the future, A confident wine." (10/2004)

1991 Dow's Vintage Port ($79.99)

92 points Wine Spectator: "Perfumed and gorgeous, with flowers, berry and plum. Full-bodied, very sweet and round, with lovely rich fruit and a long finish. A tiny bit of heat, but will come around nicely. Very pretty indeed. Hard not to swallow now. '91/'92 Port retrospective. Best from 2006 through 2014." (05/2005)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The firmly-structured, moderately tannic, impressively colored and concentrated 1991 Vintage Port is less precocious and more reserved than the 1992 Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port. It may develop along the lines of the stern but powerful 1977. The wine offers a classic display of black fruits, licorice, and chocolate aromas and flavors, as well as a full-bodied, muscular style with considerable tannin and firmness. Give it 10-12 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 30+." (02/1995)

Jancis Robinson: "Crimson with a bit of age at the rim. Warm and pruney with definite evolution, Not unattractive. Sweet red wine with marked acidity for a port. Lively, a very particular style." (08/2005)

1997 Dow's Vintage Port ($99.99)

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mouthfilling and round, without any sharp edges, but this wine remains extremely firm and dense, with several decades of life ahead of it. Dried fig, chocolate and black licorice flavors only hint at what lies ahead. " (03/2008)

94 points Wine Spectator: "Blackberry and plum character. Full-bodied, velvety and balanced. Lovely velvety tannins, sweet and long. Soft-textured yet fresh and racy. A beauty. This is would be better with a little more age, but already pretty. '77/'85/'97 blind Port retrospective. Best after 2009. (Web-2008)"

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full ruby. Lightly floral aromas of blackcurrant, maple syrup, mocha, espresso and fresh herbs. Lush and medium-sweet, with very good intensity, bright acidity and a deep, tight core of fruit. Subtle and juicy rather than unctuous or powerful, and impeccably balanced. Long, youthfully aggressive finish features a note of dark chocolate and sneaky persistence. This has the grip to reward 15 years of cellaring." (06/2000)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An evolved, less massive than normal port, the 1997 Dow's displays a dark ruby/purple color, attractive licorice, chocolate, and roasted coffee aromas, medium to full body, sweet tannin, and a moderately tannic finish. This excellent vintage port should drink well between 2004-2025." (01/2000)

http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=2 ... ML-OldPort

1994 Dow's Vintage Port ($99.99)

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet colour. The nose is just beginning to evolve into musky, dried plum and raisin aromas with whiffs of tree bark, nutmeg, cumin and cloves. The palate is seriously big and voluptuous with medium to high acidity and a medium to firm level of fine tannins. Very long finish." (09/2010)

97 points Wine Spectator: "A blackstrap, powerful Port. Black, with intense aromas of raspberries, raisins, flowers and stems. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a long, rich finish. Tannins pull at your palate. A wine for the future.--Dow vertical. Best after 2008." (12/1999)

2000 Dow Vintage Port ($99.99)

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "An impressively concentrated wine, showing the hallmark Dow’s dry edge, but still full of ripe fruit, flavors of black plums and berries. It has weight and spice, but also a delicious perfume, layered through a smooth, opulent texture. " (10/2009)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An opaque blue/purple color (typical of this vintage's top offerings) is followed by a strikingly provocative aromatic display (flowers, licorice, blackberries, and cassis). This firmly-structured, classic, tightly-knit, restrained port exhibits brilliant purity as well as impressive intensity. While not the most dramatic or flamboyant, it is a beautiful, classically structured port that will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030." (10/2002)

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated bright ruby. Primary, backward aromas of cassis, redcurrant, licorice, minerals, bitter chocolate and spices. Penetrating, structured and powerful. Not hugely sweet but boasts superb flavor definition and impressive extract. A very unevolved port that's best today on the expanding finish, which features notes of cassis, violet, dark chocolate and peaty earth and terrific grip and thrust." (01/2003)

93 points Wine Spectator: "Very grapey, with black licorice and blackberry character. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and an exquisite finish. Refined and well-made. Best after 2012." (02/2003)

K&L Notes: K&L's notes - Typical Dow. Big, burley and dryish style. Violets and some malty aromas. Rich cassis flavors. Sweet on the entry and quite silky on the mid-palate. Dry finish with plenty of tannin and acid evident.

2000 Cockburn's Vintage Port ($79.99)

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Potentially one of the most compelling wines of the vintage, this inky black/purple-colored 2000 exhibits notes of scorched earth, melted asphalt, blackberry liqueur, and a pungent, penetrating intensity that reverberates in the mouth as well as the head. Full-bodied, massive, and concentrated, with a 45-second finish, this thrilling effort should drink well between 2010-2035. " (10/2002)

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated black-ruby. Superripe but vibrant aromas of crystallized black fruits, tar and mossy earth. Thick, dense, seamless and very young, with complex notes of espresso, bitter chocolate and earth. A rather powerful wine with chewy extract. Slightly exotic but firm-edged on the long, slow-mounting finish, which features compelling sweetness and late notes of mocha and pipe tobacco. " (01/2003)

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Incredibly juicy and fruit-filled, with mixed berries leading the charge, backed by cocoa, chocolate and dried spices. It’s deceptively easy to drink now, but the structure should become more obvious in time. Côrte-Real considers it “one of the best vintages ever made.” Worth cellaring some for 50 years to see how it compares with the ’27 and ’55. Hold. " (03/2004)

91 points Wine Spectator: "Nicely made. Very subtle aromas of crushed berries, roses and lavender. Full-bodied, lightly sweet, with big juicy tannins and a long fruity finish. Best after 2010." (05/2003)

http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1 ... ML-OldPort

2000 Fonseca Vintage Port ($109.99)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Fonseca continues to exude finesse and focus on the nose, with pure blackberry, juniper berries, licorice and a touch of sloes, perhaps as Adrian Bridge remarked, just beginning to close after ten years in bottle. The palate is underpinned by very fine tannins, a sensual, svelte texture with wonderful acidity. The harmony and symmetry is alluring, the finish precise and demonstrating the persistency to suggest a long future ahead. Drink 2020-2060." (02/2013)

95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated medium-deep ruby. Exotic aromas of black fruit liqueur, road tar, smoked meat and hot stones; this reminded me of a great ripe-year Hermitage. Hugely rich and dense, with compelling sweetness and pliancy but also sound framing acidity. Extremely youthful and very long on the aftertaste. Finishes with suave but strong tannins and excellent grip and thrust. Like the best examples of the vintage, this won't injure your palate if you broach a bottle today, but it's structured for extended aging. " (02/2003)

94 points Wine Spectator: "Fabulous nose of crushed raspberries, blackberries and licorice. Full-bodied and velvety, with superclean fruit and a long finish. Beauty. Very harmonious for Fonseca. Best after 2011. " (05/2003)

1970 Graham's Vintage Port ($199.99)

94 points Wine Spectator: "This is an extremely full-bodied, powerful wine, but it still retains a classy balance. Deep ruby, with chocolate and berry aromas, full-bodied, with anise and dried cherry flavors, full, hard tannins and a long finish." (01/1989)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. The 1970 is a monumental vintage port and one of the greats of the vintage." (01/1989)

Jancis Robinson: "Bricky garnet. Lovely fig aroma but also some Victoria plum freshness. A little smoky, very complex, and a touch of furniture polish and leather but still so fresh. Victoria plum sweetness too. Smooth and powerful and finishes fresh and immensely long. 18.5/20 points." (11/2010)

http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=9 ... ML-OldPort

1983 Graham's Vintage Port ($109.99)

93 points Wine Spectator: "A superb achievement from a very underrated year. Deep dark ruby-purple, with rich floral and violet aromas, full-bodied, with masses of strawberry flavors, full tannins and a long finish" (01/1989)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. The 1983, like most vintage ports, seems more forward than normal but has a great depth of very ripe, viscous, unctuous, plummy, tarry fruit and significant tannin in its long finish. It is black-purple in color. I doubt that it will be either as profound or as long-lived as the great 1977, but is is certainly one of the top two or three ports of this vintage, and better than the excellent 1980." (01/1989)

Jancis Robinson: "Not as intense a crimson as the 1980. Quite a wide colourless rim. Burnt, sweet, almost charred nose. The overwhelming impression is one of slightly simple sweetness. Can’t see any tannins left here -- until the very end. Jewel-like -- sort of rubies in a glass. Exceptionally rich and on the finish quite delicate in fact. Very slightly simple with the alcohol just nudging in on the finish. 18/20 points. " (10/2006)

K&L Notes: 4 stars from Michael Broadbent.

1994 Graham's Vintage Port ($99.99)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In a port tasting, tasting Graham's is almost like tasting a big, rich, succulent Merlot after a group of blockbuster, tannic Cabernets. Sweeter and more obvious than many ports, the opaque purple-colored 1994 is fruity, powerful, and rich, with an addictive hedonistic quality. It will be ready to drink in 8-10 years and keep for up to 30. As always, this is a showy, flamboyant port that has the advantage of being slightly sweeter than other 1994s. A great Graham's. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2035." (10/1996)

95 points Wine Spectator: "A big, tough, young vintage Port that's closed and difficult to taste. Emits lovely aromas of chocolate, berry and plum, and is full-bodied with lots of sweet, fruit flavors and masses of velvety tannins. Long, sweet finish." (04/1997)

Jancis Robinson: "Deep garnet. Amazing nose: complex and rich, cigar box and fig, violets and sweet baking spice, muscovado sugar, ripe baked plums. Huge depth and richness, grippy but fully rounded tannins. Depth and yet no heaviness. Slight nuttiness. After all that intensity, still has freshness on the finish. Baked potato skins. Lovely sweetness. Drink 2020-2035. (18.5/20 points)" (10/2010)

2000 Graham's Vintage Port ($99.99)

98 points Wine Spectator: "#9 Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2003!!! Smells like freshly picked orchids, with loads of ripe, clean fruit. Full-bodied, medium sweet and very powerful and racy. It lasts for minutes on your palate. Yet there's a balance and class to this young Vintage Port. This is the greatest glass of Graham I have ever tasted, young or old." (05/2003)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Grapy, unformed, black raspberry liqueur and licorice-infused cassis notes leap from the glass of this opaque purple-colored wine. Sweet, plush, rich, and accessible, it is a forward, lush, concentrated effort that should drink well for two decades...it should evolve rapidly, providing immense crowd appeal." (10/2002)

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated black-ruby. Superripe, bottomless nose of black fruits, mocha, bitter chocolate and flowers. Hugely sweet, dense and rich. A port of outstanding opulence and creamy texture; deceptively easy to taste. Substantial, sweet, spreading tannins are buried under a wave of fruit. Extremely long, fruit-driven finish." (01/2003)

Jancis Robinson: "Dark crimson with a slightly weak rim. Rich, slightly volatile, evolved nose. Polished and dense and explosive. Interesting contrast with Noval 2000. More of a Fonseca style in its opulence. Lots of fun! Great richness. I would love to discover this in fact comes from somewhere other than Portugal! Complete. 18.5/20 points." (12/2012)

K&L Notes: 93+ Neil Martin: "This seems to have more volatility on the nose than the other 2000s although it is not distracting from the ripe toasty black fruit infused with liquorices and creme de menthe. The palate is full-bodied with exceptionally smooth tannins, very refined and harmonious. A sensuous Grahams with black cherry, black olive, fruitcake, California raisin and damson towards the finish. Primal of course, but great potential. Drink 2012-2040. Tasted May 2009." Yikes! Those are some really high prices, even by K&L standards.

1994 and 1983 Graham are both available from big, reliable online retailers for $75-$80. 1970 Graham is available for $150.

It is a nice selection of Port... but wow those are optimistic prices!

K&L has horrible prices on older wines. But if you need one, they usually have a good smattering of the big boys.
