For The Love Of Port

Hello dear wine gurus,

I have four bottles of Terrantez 1842 wine that I got from my grandmother and that I would like to sell.
As you may see from the pictures I haven't cleaned them as I don't know what would be appropriate. Filling level of the bottles is pretty good. Only one of the bottles goes a bit below the bottle neck.

I also have a fifth bottle that is empty because my grandmother already drunk it. She said the wine was still very drinkable/enjoyable. Bottle and label are in good shape and a few drops of wine remain in the bottle.

Any advice on how and where I could sell the bottles are very welcome

Hello. I can't open the link you posted, but i'm thinking these bottles are quite valuable. 1842 Terrantez from an unknown producer is probably selling for 1-2000 US Dollars per bottle. Auction may be the best outlet. I'd be interested myself, but getting the bottles to the States may be a problem.

No clue how I would ship to the US but surely there may be specialists for that...

I have seen many very differing prices on the inet for similar wines so what could be a good way of estimating a wine like this?

Link worked for me. Those are some old bottles, not just the contents.

Good luck with your sale. There are some ways to ship to the US, through an importer. Often it isn't worth the cost, but in this case someone might find that cost to be negligible compared to the bottle price. And we do have a good number of forum members from Europe on this board. And yet another option for those in the US is to pick them up next time you are across the pond.

These look like other bottles I've seen. A number of them have come up for sale at auction over the past few years.

This past December two bottles of unknown producer 1942 Terrantez came up for auction in New York at Christies. I did not see a picture of them so I don't know if they are the same bottling, but they sold for $5500 including buyers premium.

Looks like they were selling a good story along with the bottles...

I already wrote to Christies what they would think about the bottles but the answer I got was very brief. So I have some questions open to them about the procedure and fees but I didn't get an answer yet.

Next week is holiday here so I'll be gone skiing with the kids. Thanks so far to the board for giving good advice

If Christies does accept the consignment, I wonder where they'll put it up for sale. I think the prices in the US are higher than in Europe.

Regardless of where the prices fall, it is clear that there is a huge wave of interest in Madeira here stateside. Although also increasing, the UK is not as rabid in its buying of Madeira, at least not for the truly great 19th century bottlings that we see at auction.

Many of the bottles in the December Christie's New York sale went to British and other foreign buyers, including those at the stratospheric prices. They will not freely reveal this after the sale (except off the record to known long-time buyers). While listening to the sale live, they announced where bids originate from, and it was clear that the buyers were not only or overwhelmingly just from the US.
