I'll tell you why they are taking off...the world has discovered just how darn tasty those little suckers are. They're like crack; you just can't have one.

All Brazilian bakeries in my neighborhood sell them. I buy them for desserts when doing a port tasting.

My wife and I tried them when we first moved here - revoltingly sweet. All of the Portuguese "with coffee" pastries are. We honestly cannot understand how anyone enjoys them, but as with wine, nobody can tell you that how you perceive the taste is wrong.

I find them too sweet and heavy, my stomach isn’t happy afterwards.

However, this past trip I stopped at the famous shop in Belém, and what a difference. Fresh from the oven, and somehow much lighter and fluffier. I thoroughly enjoyed two of them with espresso.
