ON-LINE SORCE FOR PORT

Has anyone found an on-line sorce that offers extensive selection in port? Is there a secret site out there some of you do most on-line shopping at? If so please do share!

Hi David,
I think an important thing to add to your post would also be from where you join us, because if you are from US for examples it doesn't make much sense to write about UK sites for example.

There is really no one stop shopping for Port in the states. Some stores, such as Premier Cru or K&L) tend to have a decent selection of Port all the time. But they all tend to come and go, in relation to what they stock or the variety. And prices can vary wildly between stores. So I just use Winesearcher and go from there.

It is a very good question. I usually end up shopping locally and paying a little more because I do not buy in case quantities and the shipping costs on single bottles are not cost effective.
I seem to be older than many of the other members and prefer to try as many different Ports as possible.

I live in Sacramento CA.....well I kind of half expected for there to be no real "port authority" for on-line sales....perhaps I was just dreaming of portheaven.com or something like that...ha....oh well, thanks for the info guys...!

Another fine source is 20/20 wine merchants in Los Angeles. Although they do tend to be more expensive, the selection of older vintages in particular is pretty impressive.

Agreed, but there prices are prohibitive and many folks consider that retailer "a joke" as they are nearly always amongst THE most expensive listing on winesearcher.com, but if you MUST have a bottle quick ...
Anyway, there are so many great Port-friendly websites and brick & mortar retailers out there.
I almost forgot about Tom at Flickinger. They have a very wide supply of Ports.

True, 20/20 would not be my everyday "go-to" source for port. Although on occasion I've picked up some hard-to-find bottles at reasonable prices. The key is to do a bit of research and have some sort of ballpark figure in mind before laying down some serious dollars for a port purchase. If the price seems wildly out of whack, just step away (this applies for wildly expensive as well as amazingly cheap bottles), chances are you'll probably get burned either way. Just my two centavos...

Jeez, although Madeira is their thing, The Rare Wine Co. is certainly a progressive Port retailer and occasionally turn up some real gems.

I agree Marc. I've bought from 20/20 a few times and got good deals. But they are no where near my everyday source for any wine due to their prices. But if you need it fast and don't mind paying a premium, they usually have a really good selection of old Ports.

I have found Premier Cru to generally have the best pricing, but you may need to wait a long time if the Port is "pre-arrival"
Blicker-Pierce sometimes have nice deals, particularly for less popular vintages such as '95:
