For The Love Of Port

Has some bottles and drank all, except one during the 90s. Always a wonderful
vintage, perhaps among the best Ferreiras. The last bottle was drank last week.
Perfectly mature, still with life to go ahead more 10 years, but the pleasur for
drinking now is so great that is someone may have a bottle, I'd sugesto to try.

FERREIRA 1978. A fully mature bottle os Vintage Port. Says all about the finesse and silkyness
that only the best vintages gather with age. Intense and gentle: power and smoothness.
A wonderful array of complex aromas all perfectly integrated and balanced, as
one finds in the best DRC wines, evolves during the drinking.
Chocolate, cofee, green coffee, quite delicate
and enticing. FIgs and dried figs, marmelade, oriental spices, roses, tea, apricots, peaches,
dates, dried fruits ... Caresses the palate, warm, fresh and gentle.
A very long and creamy finish, still with grip and life.

I have had this a few times, usually during several Ferreira verticals I have been a part of. A fine wine and one of the better ones. The other two in the same generation that are still drinking beautifully are the 1960 and 1980 ... all three of which (incl. 1978) are from non-generally declared vintages. That is saying a lot about this house. I have often found some of their best work was bottled in non-traditional vintages.

This is true with Ferreira and noticed it on our vertical as well.

Actually, looking at picture I took of the bottles from our vertical. '78 was an off bottle for us while the 1975 was winner as well as their Quint do Seixo 1983. I guess those are not reall "off" years...

Depends on your view of the 1975 vintage. I am in total agreement and had a great bottle of the 1975 at Ferreira last Oct. About a week later, I guessed a youngish bottle of 1927 Fonseca (generously opened by Uncle Tom) as the 1975 Ferreira in front of a very amused audience near Cambridge, England. However, given the same bottle today ... I might make the very same mistake. There was a very distinct similarity ... at least to that particular bottle of the Fonseca. That's my story and I am sticking to it. :help:
