I know that some people greatly enjoy this wine. A little bird told me that 4 cases are soon to be available (a new release) in the NY market. Stay tuned for more information as I don't know which retailers will be carrying it yet.

Wow, four cases. Well, that tells me that it was purchased when the Rare Wine Co. did their initial auction upon release, to raise money for New Orleans after the tragedy there. Later when it was sold to the public by RWC, nobody could even buy more than a few bottles (as so litte was produced -- most going to the auction) no less four full cases. So a private collector is now going to sell what they bought in hopes of some profit. Of course, all of what I have just typed is 100% pure speculation, however, based on factual circumstantial evidence.

My guesswork may be spot on, maybe not. To put things in perspective though, this wine sold for $75 out of the gate and I will say in my most honest salesman's voice ... 'it was the singular best bottling of Madeira for under $100 that has been sold, since the 1968 D'Oliveiras was sold for $69 many years ago.'

In all honesty, I hope this is parceled out and allocated, so that more people can have an opportunity to try this gem, by far and away my favorite of the RWC Historic Series bottlings. Hopefully, the owner will not price gouge and will sell to those who will truly appreciate what they are about to buy/drink.

I'd love a few myself and will keep my fingers crossed.

Check out the RWC website if you want to see what it sells for today. My last purchase was at $125 and it was still well worth that asking price ... the 1968. As to the wholesale price, I am not going to publish that here and your B&M can find it if they're interested.

So Scott, are you going to ever come back and tell us or was this all just rumor and innuendo?

I'm still waiting to hear myself. The distributor that has the four cases is Polaner Selections, and, to the best of my knowledge it is allocated meaning it will be spread around to different retailers. I will let you know which retailers as soon as I do.

i live only a few blocks from this place if anyone needs me to pick up...that said, it's notoriously overpriced on most things, does anyone think these can and will be found at better prices?

I am partly going to disappoint some of you but in other ways encourage you to buy this if you get the chance.

I recently attended a tasting in London where a great many fortified wines were on show. I had only tasted 2 Madeira's before I went to this tasting, both of which were 130+ years old. I was not sufficiently impressed by those experiences to buy Madeira so this seemed like a good opportunity to taste a wide range of what is available. I tasted lots of different varieties, styles and ages and head and shoulders above everything I tasted was the Broadbent Terrantez 1978. Unfortunately I did not take a tasting note but I do remember thinking that this was a much more balanced and quaffable style thatn any of the others I tasted, although I have to say that the D'Oliveiras Reserva Boal 1958 came a very close second!

It was only after I tasted it that it was explained to me how rare this grape is on the island. If I ever buy Madeira, it will say Terrantez on the label

I believe this was originally released at $80-90. Don't think it's available anywhere now. It was a limited release, and the people at Rare Wine don't think there'll be another.

I ordered six bottles. Following up on Eric's comments, I don't think that the price is outrageous given the situation.

I think that I will use this wine every year on 8 January to toast the great victory of the US Army in the battle of New Orleans in 1815.
