Hey Bernard, I have to agree with Derek; if one tastes good then you might have yourself a deal for short term. A plus is that they were in a cupboard/closet that has rarely if ever been opened in that time, so it's always been dark. Hmmm, well, sorta. Yes, they've been kept in the dark but there's ...

Thanks for the note!

To Alec, I find your statement about Graham's being the best wine of the vintage ... with the footnote that you have not even tried it, well, ludicrous. How can you make a statement like this without trying the wine? Just by reading about it? Come on many, I normally love your posts, but this one? ...

I admit that I could go either way. If the port isn't terribly expensive, there's nothing more satisfying to open it within the first few years. The 1997s and 2000s are stunning right now. The real heavy hitters, though, like my 1994 Taylor and Fonseca, 1997 Niepoort, and 2000 Grahams will live a ni...

Ooooh, I dunno. My choice would be the 1985 Warres; I have to disagree with Roy on that -- the '85 Warres is drinking beautifully now.

You might also try making a copy of this post in the regular Port forum to get more responses. The more opinions the better.

Well, the 1992 Taylor might be good but someone just bid $360 for a 750ml bottle. That's before the 15% buyer's premium:

Is it that good?

Hey Glen, The Fonseca 2000 isn't bad at $45, but you might also try a Niepoort 2000 as well. The Niepoort 2000 (Secundum) is around the same price and is a wonderful wine. (Just checked and found the Niepoort for $31/bottle! Here is the URL: http://www.amazinggrapeswinestore.com/store/store.asp?acti...

... the perennial tendency to speak over-highly of the latest offering. YES, I have to agree with Tom on this one. When you can find fine aged ports for the same price as a new release something is wrong. Sure for a "vintage of the century" (read 1994) that might be normal with all the pr...

Is mildew a bad sign?

Was looking at a Sothebys Auction and they had some port at a decent price but the labels were supposedly covered with mildew. Now, I'm not that precious when it comes to the label.....what I care about is what's inside. But I'm curious to know if anyone has found a link between a mildewed bottle an...

Actually, Fred, when you had the Optima you had my favorite thus far. I've tried a few others. The Noval was nice but if I did it again I'd take that $30 and invest it into the Optima and use the leftover $10 to catch a movie. Optima was by far my favorite for the price. I'd be interested in trying ...

What's for dessert? :D I think it depends on whether you plan to pair it with something or have it on it's own. Our dessert this year is going to be poached pears with vanilla sauce. That doesn't really call for Port, so I'm going to match it with either a Sauterrne, TBA, or Tokaji. I'd love to try ...

There's only one importer of Niepoort into the US....and they have an exclusive deal to do that. (Note the similar prices just about everywhere ...) I don't think anyone is importing Portal. Best advice is to pick an importer and have a bunch of us write in and ask for it. They're not stupid; if the...

1994 Rozes Vintage Port

After 3 hours of decanting: Deep garnet color with a slight amber edge. Bit cloudy, but that could be my lack of great decanting skills. Nose of charcoal and tar, fruit begins to emerge. Light fruit, though, rasberry, strawberry....peach? Yes, peach.. or apricot. A little grapey, almost of blaufrank...

I doubt this will cause prices to rise; as RP (or indeed PR) don't seem to have the same inpact on Port pricing as they do in other regions (the 100 point Taylor '92 is a good example)- god bless, I might add! Didn't read this before. Lowest price I can find for 1992 Taylor is $160 per bottle. It's...

Week 3: 2003 Grahams Vintage Port

OMG, get this. Union Square Wines in New York is a store I frequent as often as possible; they've got a great selection and their prices are usually pretty good. But this is a total scam. 2003 Grahams Vintage Port is for sale at $119.00 per bottle! I'm sure it's a wonderful wine, and I'm itching to ...

How does adding a 'value' score help? They can only get that wrong, right? I mean, if I have $50 million I am not going to worry about spending $1500 on a bottle of wine when I want the best. And if I have $50,000 there is no way I'm buying it. But the wine is the same in both cases! Any assumption...

Kudos to the person that decided to pair port with cheesecake. Could be considered heresy by some but cheesecake with ruby or LBV is delightful. But only with a New York style cheescake, as you had. In less than a week my new convection oven will be installed and put to the test with my latest chees...
