2014: The BEST Madeira(s) you have consumed this year?

Post by Roy Hersh »

At least for me, this is going to be very difficult to choose. You may pick one or list your favorites that you've enjoyed drinking this year. They don't have to be expensive or even old; just bottles that have captured your heart and mind this year.

An old standby... the 1827 Quinta do Serrado Boal.

On the less expensive side, the Barbeito 30 year Malvasia was stunning.

The only Madeira worth mentioning was a 5 year old malmsey, just from a bottle that had been hidden away for some estimated(with help from H&H office) 75 years.

Thanks to the 3 of you. I will admit to being stunned that lots more people have not chimed in on this thread. Should be fairly easy for most to answer this question. [shrug.gif]

I have been kind of in a Madeira Groundhog Day in that I have been mainly opening and enjoying the same bottles over and over. A few standouts are:

1827 Serrado Boal- One of the top three Madeiras I have ever had. Fantastic from beginning to end. We are all lucky this wine exists in the quantity it does. Im on the hunt for some more for my cellar.

1830 Serrado Malmsey- Also fantastic and huge.

1994 D'Oliveiras Verdelho Colheita- This is a wine EVERYONE needs as a cellar defender. Very pure, and classic Vedelho. Incredible depth for such a youngster.

HH Inauguration- Fantastic wine again to serve to someone who wants to experience madeira for the first time. Huge, acidic, dark, viscous.

1922 D'Oliverias Boal- Another fantastic Boal I have enjoyed this year. Extremely complex.

Justin,

Where did you get the 1994 D'Oliveiras Verdelho Colheita? It doesn't show up in WineSearcher or on D'Oliveira's web site.

Paul,

I haven't seen the 1927 Blandy's bastardo. Is it in the UK only?

BTW: have bought a bottle of 1927 Bastardo from Leacock some months ago and have a bottle each of Oliveira as well as Adegas Torreao lying in my cellar.

Andreas,

Thanks. I have only the D'Oliveiras. My long-term project is to acquire a bottle of 1875 Blandy's from a friend. So far, I've been unsuccessful.

For me it was the 1880 Barbeito Malvasia. Amazing! The first wine that I've given 100 points!

Other top wines:

H&H Grand Old Bual - 99 points
1827 Quinto do Serrado Boal - 98 points
1875 Barbeito Malvasia - 98 points
1850 D'Oliveira's Verdelho - 98 points

For non-vintage it was easily the Barbeito 40 year old Malvasia "Mae Manuela"
