1985 Kopke Colheita. Leaner than some of the other vintages I bought via FTLOP offer recently. Takes a few days to open up.

Re: What have you opened this week?
I was largely off the grid for the past week on vacation. I did manage to drag along a few bottles to enjoy, a magnum of 2000 Presidential VP and 1997 Niepoort VP. Both were nice, the Niepoort had just a slight touch of VA but far less than other bottles. The Presidential was quite nice, like a lovely unfiltered LBV.

For my Port Club:
San Leonardo 10-20-30-40 Tawnies
Sandeman 40 Tawny
Delaforce Reserve Tawny
The Sandeman may be flawed--cork broke apart and a bit cloudy. We'll see. Very excited to have the San Leonardo's considering all the good press here.

Silence before the storm (large port fair tomorrow in Denmark)
Friday afternoon in company with Gustavo Devesas and 5 Dow's including a newcomer, the 2011 LBV. We were the first to taste it in Denmark (World?) and you can only pre-order it at the moment.
I will bunch up all my taste notes from the Quevedo, Dow's and the port fair and post them during next week. I will also try and take some pictures so you can see what the fuzz is about and you migth recognize a face or two

Nice line up. Gustavo is a great guy, hard to believe I first met him back when he was a lot younger at Vinalogia circa 2006Thomas V wrote:Silence before the storm (large port fair tomorrow in Denmark)

What did you think of the last 3? I have a few each of the first two and haven't cracked 'em lately. The last is pricey in my local market and want to know if it's worth it.Roy Hersh wrote:A last minute Port get together ...

When I say last minute, all 4 are still in decanter. This came up about 3 in the afternoon today.

The Noval 2003 needed another day to really unwind. From the color and the great nose it was a very worthy Port but on the palate it needed some further air to show its best.
Fonseca 2005 was very good, still quite primary and just beginning to enter the zone where it will be more fun to drink.
Cavadinha 1992 was outstanding. It already has become a really complex VP and well into secondary characteristics, with a sublime mouthfeel and stellar finish.

Re: What have you opened this week?
Nice. Cavadinha for some reason in my experience always matures very early compared to some other SQVP's. That's not bad, actually it's nice to get a good SQVP that doesn't need a long time to be ready to drink.Roy Hersh wrote:Quevedo Crusted

Re: What have you opened this week?
Agreed. But while this did show the more mature flavors compared to most in its age group and 24, for a SQVP, it is not much of a stretch. Then again, I believe this has the structure to stay on a lengthy plateau. In another five to eight years, this is going to begin to be a real head turner, if you like soft, rich, smooth and multi-faceted SQVPs.

Re: What have you opened this week?
In this exciting time of a whole lot of 2011 LBV's being released I find it appropriate to crack open this 2011 Burmester LBV. Will be interesting to see how it holds up against the Quevedo and Dow's that I have already tasted

Re: What have you opened this week?
A nice exersice for one friday night.
My daugther turns 18 later in march (the date in Denmark, when the child is suposed to be an adult; can vote, get married, buy a house, get a driving license.)
Not the Best Portyear....But very surprised over the mature VP. After 4 hours, it reached it peek, and the Nose was surprisingly Big and exciting. Nice soft fruity taste, no tannins what so ever.
The Colheita was a pleasent drink aswell.
I must say I had not the Best hopes up. Both wines were bought in Denmark for around $ 28 a piece.
I will serve bothe wines at the party.
