Caves da Murganheira, Douro DOC or not?

Post by Eric Menchen »

Caves da Murganheira is south of the Douro a fair bit, but close to the Rio Varosa which flows into the Douro, so I think it is still part of the Douro valley in a topographical sense. But is it in the demarcated Douro DOC?

It is part of the Távora-Varosa DOC. So clearly not part of Douro DOC, it is squeezed between Douro and Dao, high elevated region with soils having high quantities of granite, probably why it is not part of Douro. It was demarcated in 1989, especially to express its great sparkling wine character.
