2008 Niepoort Charme

Post by Roy Hersh »

Although I have always been in lust with the 2002 version, and have had every vintage since then, I opened a 2008 at a great new Tapas restaurant in a little known corner of Porto. The '08 Charme may just be the next best vintage after 2002, which is saying a ton. Fresh, immediately approachable, but was put in a decanter for an hour after the first couple of sips. Really enjoyed the bright fruit and vibrancy of the acid. Excellent for current enjoyment, with years of life ahead of it. It was next to impossible to tell this had a decade of age already!

The almost impossible to find 2006 is for me the next big thing after 2002. I had that Charme a couple of months ago and loved it as well. I served it blind to a friend who was definitively in Burgundy but could not say where. 04 and 05 are more Douro wines in style. It is really interesting as you mention, the aging pace of this wine.

Been curious on this vintage, good to hear. I have few bottles I have been saving for someone who'd appreciate them to share.
