1997 Quinta do Infantado VP

Post by Mike J. W. »

Won a case of this back in mid-April at the ridiculous price of $16/ea. I had the 2000 version a few times before and liked it. This was bottle # 9930 although it didn't say how many were produced that year. The bottles were wrapped in plastic wrap because the labels were falling off (lousy glue batch?). The cork came out clean, but I had to work hard to extract it. It was a nice tight seal and only the very tip of the cork was soaked.

It smelled of fruit punch, raspberries and old leather. I let it sit in the decanter for about 7 hours which seemed just about right. It had a medium mouthfeel and was very jammy, again, tasting of fresh raspberries. There was the slightest hints of alcohol and VA, but neither was unpleasant. Great acidity that made me coming back for more. Overall, this is a good Port and for the price I got it at, you can't beat the QPR. It probably has another 10 to 15 years life in it. I'd give this a 91. If you can get them cheap (WineBid has a bunch at $20 right now before taxes and fees), I'd recommend picking up a few. 91 points.
"I have often thought that the aim of Port is to give you a good and durable hangover, so that during the next day you should be reminded of the splendid occasion the night before." - Hungarian/British journalist & author George Mikes
