Silly post, but I picked up some wines at Premier Cru on Saturday, and they gave me the nice wood Vesuvio box to go with my 4 bottles of 2003 Vesuvio. Has the little booklet and everything! I know, I'm easily entertained Hey, some of us don't have these luxurious basement cellars like I read about all the time; at least I have a box that makes my living room look a little like one
I also received a box, book and bin plate with my six pack. It really is a neat set of packageing and I agree that other houses should do the same, but it does show how much profit they are making on these newer vintages if they can afford topublish a book in limited numbers.
My personal preference would be for the other port producers to not follow Vesuvio, perhaps with the exception of Taylors with their Vinha Velha and Noval's Nacional. (I must admit that I was a little disappointed with the packaging of the Vinha Velha 2000 when I bought my 3 pack for a considerable sum of money and found it came in a light, wooden sliding front box like the one that a single bottle of LBV comes in.)
Apart from these wines, I would be very happy to continue to see people like Taylors, the Symingtons and most other producers ship in traditional wooden cases with heat branded logos and vintage details on each box. If I want to turn these into storage for use around the house it usually takes me a couple of days of part time work to sand them smooth, varnish them, add hinges and a little latch and then they look very attractive. My wife has even attached a cushion to the top of a couple of them to make footstools with storage underneath.
My personal preference is for different producers to continue to differentiate themselves in different ways - but I do accept that other people will have different opinions.
Has anybody even noticed (nobody has mentioned in this thread or the one with the "Vesuvio box poll") that for some odd reason and for the first time ... there is no vintage date on the outside of the 2003 boxes.
Roy, good point. That might address Alex's complaint about adding cost. Perhaps they made a larger run of these boxes to get a lower price per unit, for use in future vintages as well?
