Post by Mario Ferreira »

I've have never been at this place (shame on me ), however here is a suggestion for visitors to the California Wine Country :)

LaSalette is portuguese restaurant located right in the middle of Sonoma (California), which may be considered quite unusual !!!
This is the link: http://www.lasalette-restaurant.com

Click here to see Pictures of some of the Entrées.

I've also seen this at other restaurants but an interesting detail at LaSalette is that there's a Wine suggestion for each individual dessert.
Click here to check the Dessert Menu.

LaSalette Restaurant opened to a warm reception in Sonoma Valley in the spring of 1998. Providing modern adaptations of old-world Portuguese home cooking in a charming and graceful atmosphere, a visit to LaSalette pleases all the senses: music, local art, and the international flavors of Portuguese cuisine combine to create a dining experience unlike any other in the Wine Country.

LaSalette was named after Owner/Chef Manuel Azevedo’s mother, who immigrated with her family from the Azores to Sonoma in the 1960’s, and who taught him to love and appreciate the food and culture of his family’s Portuguese home. Spending time with her in the garden, planting and harvesting the fresh vegetables that we would use in making dinner for the family, inspired his passion for bringing the rich and varied Portuguese cuisine to the table. Sharing his culinary heritage with friends and family has always been a part of Chef Azevedo’s life, and now he shares it with Sonoma Valley as well: an evening at LaSalette is an invitation into his home and the Portuguese culture.

To understand Portuguese cuisine, it is important to know the history of Portugal and her former colonies. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal was the world’s dominant sea faring and colonizing power. Portuguese fleets traveled the world, establishing trade routes and colonies from the Atlantic islands to Africa and the Far East. Each new discovery added to and changed the character of Portuguese food, and today the cuisine of Portugal evokes a voyage around the world, with such items as rice from the East, hot peppers from Africa, rich spices from India, potatoes and tomatoes from the New World, and cod from Newfoundland. From the savory stews of Brazil to the fresh and diverse seafood of the Atlantic coast, Portuguese food is a truly global experience.

The menu at LaSalette brings this taste of the world to Sonoma, and reflects Chef Azevedo’s commitment to re-creating for his guests the delights of Portuguese home cooking. LaSalette uses only the freshest local meats and produce, and Azevedo buys the best seafood daily from top vendors in the Bay Area. They make their own bread and cheeses.

LaSalette’s wine list was honored by the Wine Spectator with its “Award of Excellence” for their selection of Portuguese and Sonoma favorites, carefully chosen to complement and enhance the food, and thirty selections of Portos, Madeiras, and Muscatels.

I'll have to pay this place a visit - Sonoma isn't terribly far from where I live (Marin County). I've never had Portugese cuisine before, though from descriptions I've seen, it sounds rather atypical of "Mediterranean" cuisines.

Peter, if you do so, please post here a review on the restaurant overall: food, service, ambiance, etc.
I've never been at this place myself and, since I've heard mixed reviews about the restaurant, I'm curious to know more about other people's opinion.

One suggestion: "Porco a Alentejana" is one of my favourite portuguese dishes. When cooked properly, it makes a really pleasant meal :). However, you may want to try a different thing. Good luck / Enjoy :)

BTW, Alentejo, in the south of Portugal, is one of my favourite portuguese geographic regions. You may click here to learn more about their Wines & Food.
