1940 Burmester Colheita Port

Post by Marc Sherwin »

Shamed into writing my first TN, so be kind.

The bottle was bought from the Burmester Lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia and brought home by air.
The fun part was that I got to try some from an open bottle left over from some VIPs - maybe the previous harvest tour?
A quick check on the wife's international crackberry confirmed the price was appropriate, although high.

Bottled in 2001. Bottle condition was excellent - even got the silly wooden box with it.

This is hands down my favorite port ever. Silky smooth, subtle start (zero sharpness), with a beautiful butterscotch tone. The finish was clean, not lingering too long, but enough to keep you smiling. The color tone was very nice and perfectly clear. My wife almost refused to let me open it (she had tasted it also), and it took me a year of working on her to get her agreement to open it on New Year's eve.

The bottle had zero sediment which was good as I tried to lick out the last drops. You know a port is good when it takes every ounce of self control to share it with your guests (which I did) and when you dread pouring out the last glass.

I don't trust myself to use rating scores, but if I come across this port again I will buy it as quickly as possible.

Great TN :salute:

Glad you liked it, they do make some really nice Ports. If you get the chance, the 1937 is a killer bottle and worth every penny.

Congratulations and thanks for sharing your 1st TN. Outstanding!!!

Don't you hate when you get to the end of that last glass?

I am jonesing for some great Colheita. The 1963 Burmester Colheita is always great in addition to the oldies like the 1937.
