Which Value Vintage Port?

First post in this great forum...looking forward to participating!

These days at the SAQ they have a number of wines and portos on special. I'm considering adding to my cellar rigt now and have the following available and consider interesting:

Quinta Do Estanho VP 2000, $36.75

Porto Pocas VP 2001, $40.50

Burmster Quinta Nova VP 2000, $45.00

Ferreira VP 2000 (375ml), $46.00

Warres VP 2000 (375ml), $35.50

Any particularly good values there?

I generally find that 375's in north america have no intrinsic value as they are often priced significantly higher than half the rate of a 750. If I can find a 350 at $20 or less I may grab one or two, but generally I find the value is with the 750's. Unfortunately of the 750's you listed I'm not familiar with any, though I might be tempted to try the Burmeister, even though they are more known for colheitas (to me).

My choice would be with Warre's but try to find a 750 ml if you want to keep it for a long time. Then I'd go with Ferreira and Pocas. The later is really producing good vintage lately.

Other good products at 25% at the SAQ in the same range of price is the Quinta do Roriz 2000/2001, Dow's 2000, Ramos Pinto 2000.

Welcome aboard and it is nice to see you dive right in!

I don't see anything in that list which is too impressive given those prices. Personally, I'd pass on all of them and those prices for half bottles seem quite high (even for SAQ prices).

Since you are new, here is a preview of one tasting note from the upcoming newsletter. Not trying to discourage you from buying:

2001 Quinta de Roriz Vintage Port – Inky centered with a ruby rim, this Roriz offered lively violet and licorice aromas. The blackberry fruit was ripe and dense. This drinks well now but shows some prominent alcohol on the finish. 86 points (10/26/05)

Don't disregard Burmester altogether (VPs that is) as if you can get your hands on the 1985 it is pretty darn good, and the 1927 is even better ... but I have not had one since the v. early 1990s.

Did not drink the Ferreira 2000 myself but JS gave it 89 points in the Wine Spectator and I have to say I often agree with him. You could give that one a try .

Premier Cru had a sale on this, this weekend. $29.99 a bottle. For a full .750!

At UK auctions recently there has been a very slack market for the lesser known shippers -

e.g.

Kopke '94 @ 99 pounds/12
Gould Campbell '94 @ 154 pounds/12
Offley '83 @ 154 pounds/12 (in 24's)

I also note that Delaforce 2003 is now being sold for less than it's opening price.

A good time to look behind the frontline names perhaps...
