2007 Graham's Vintage Port

Post by Barry Sunderland »

Broke into a .375 of this.

As a pop 'n pour, this is DENSE primal juice. Thick, JUICY, boat-loaded with dark fruits, and just plain, down-right PLEASURABLE to drink. [yahoo.gif]
What I dig about opening such a young bottle of port, besides loving its youth, is the fact that it will stay alive for several days longer after opening rather than an older
port.

I agree - a very nice (albeit very young!) VP. Juicy and luscious!

You might want to edit the thread subject, though, so that it will show up in the TN database correctly. For it to be picked up correctly, the subject should be "2007 Graham Vintage Port" without the quotes, of course.

HI,

I am a noob, so sry that I ask, but, isn't it a fauxpas to open a VP that early? Or is it still better than a Tawny or LBV?

This is a smoking good bottle right now and will also reward long term cellaring, so I'm glad you enjoyed it.

No worries about the "noob" question, as any question is a good question and worth asking. The short answer is, there is no wrong time to drink a Port. It really depends on what you're looking for in a VP, do you want that lush dense tannic monster when they are young, or do you want the elegance and secondary characteristics when they are mature?

It also may depend on your mood. Sometimes I crave a young monster of a VP and sometimes I don't. Many people, myself included, also think it's very important to enjoy them when they are young so you can experience for yourself what they are like and then periodically retaste them every 5 or so years to see how they are evolving. I toss the 5 or so years out there as a guide, so don't get too stuck on hard numbers. The important thing is simply to periodically come back to them to chart their change.

So the choice is yours, and don't let anyone tell you you can't drink them young.

Barry,

2007 Graham's is a very beautiful wine that has some excellent upside potential but it is certainly great to try now. I had one last month and it was showing great, as you've mentioned.

Just curious, do you like young CA Cabernets? I am not trying to be funny.

Hey Roy,

I'm glad that you had a great trip!

I love young cab...vibrant, lush, juicy, with good tannins.

I find a correlation between Americans who like young Napa Cabs and those Port enthusiasts who don't mind enjoying young VP on occasion too. It is not foolproof, but I also find these same individuals tend to like Zinfandel and Amarone too.

Umm, yeah, I suppose I do.

Definitely guilty on both counts there. I guess it's time to go open a young Port!
