1954 H&H Terrantez

I recently got a 1954 H&H terrantez from RWC. I have not seen any reviews or tasting notes except for what is on the Henriques & Henriques web site. Has anyone tried this wine or seen any tasting notes?

The bottle appears to have a T-cork.

The capsule is plastic or foil. Stamped on the top of the capsule is “Trademark Belem Madeira”. According to Alex Liddell, Belem’s Madeira Wine, Lda is one of H&H’s associated companies.

There are also numbers on the side of the capsule.
27052008 – Would this be a bottling date?
L23060285 - A lot number?

Tasted it at H&H in September for the first time. It's a great wine, quite concentrated. I will post my TN here within a day or two...

I had purchased a bottle of this but have yet to take delivery. Odd that it had a T-Cork; I hope it is not indicative of the quality, although Niklas' post is promising.

Hi Gary,

I am so sorry! I totally forgot to follow up on this one. Moved to a new place and that obviously took all my time.

Anyway; I really like the 1954 but it is very different in style compared to the company's 1976 Terrantez which is more restrained and acidity driven. The 1954 shows more concentration, darker scents in form of oriental spices, dark chocolate, ground coffee. Also on the palate it is different with more sweetness to it. I was lucky to try some different 1954 wines at my last visit in September and they all share a common denominator; they are concentrated and with great potential. Feels like one of the really great years for Madeira. Also interesting, is that slightly bitter feel you find in Terrantez, in the mouth. Not in the 1954. However, I find it in the 1976. Don't know if it has anything to do with the baumé of the grapes but perhaps a good year like 1954 offers a phenolic ripeness that reduces the bitterness of Terrantez (alhough i actually like that bitter feel).

If the 1976 is more citrus peel, then the 1954 is all about orange peel. I know you shouldn't compare, I want them both (!), but I would say the 1954 is a step up in quality. More concentration and depth. That said, I still find the 1976 bit more on the elegant style.

1976 I would serve with a creamy mushroom soup. 1954 I would more think of in terms of a dessert.

Thanks for the information. I have had the 1954 Leacock terrantez, which was rather sweet and lacking any bitterness. Perhaps it is a characteristic of the vintage. I've never seen the 1976 H&H terrantez. I found the new 20 year H&H terrantez to have a touch of bitterness which complemented the sweetness in the wine.
