I followed your advice.

I contacted K&L wines in San Fransisco, and they have reduced the prices on Justino vintage wines !! The 1933 Malmsey cost now $ 179.99 compared to $ 249.99 before !!

Compare that to the prices I mentioned in the beginning of this thread.

As Paul Day mention earlier in this thread it :

It must be plenty around.

Though I ordered two bottles for pick-up in San Fransisco on Sept. 23rd.

I don't have it in my collection, and it is a good wine as reviewed by others.

So guys, run and buy !!

End of the day, a few more cases will appear....... Maybe also at Justino's which they keep for themselve. Smart draw !

I paid recently at auction £80 for a Justino sercial 1940 which was bottled in 86 this had a Dutch label on the back.

If this is all caused by old stocks being repleted due to the increased popularity of Madeira, what's happening in terms of production volumes?

I got a suprise today. Went to the state owned liquor store in my hometown.

From Sept. 1 st, for the first time, they have Justinos 10 year Malmsey ( bottled June 2006 ) at a shocking low price, $ 31,66 at todays rate. Now it is not necessary for me to bring, as planned a couple of Broadbent 10 year Malmsey ( the same ?? , just paint on the bottles ??) from the US when I am in San Fransisco next week..

The price is about $ 7 cheaper than similar 10 year olds from H&H. And when you know that included in the price are $ 10 alcoholic tax and 25 % VAT I wonder about the US prices once again and also Justinos export prices FOB Funchal ! ! They cannot be very high.

Anyway Oct. 9th I will be in Funchal for a week, and I will check a lot of stuff plus bring home many goodies.

IIRC, the Broadbent 10 yr Malmsey is a different blend than the Justino's 10 yr. Mr. Broadbent selected the blend himself and it is a bit different than the regular Justino bottling. So, you are still going to have to pick up those Broadbents.

Has anyone blindtasted them both ? Do you get Justino's label in the US ?

I have not tasted mine yet. Have no time since we leave on Monday. Anyway lookng forward to taste other 10 and 15 year there. Barros & Sousa, Borges. So much goodies.

Just been home from Funchal. Checked prices there for Justino B+V 1934 ( could not find 1933 M, but did not look so much for it either ).

From an old pricelist at "Wine and Wicker", the guy gave me, same as the past years, EUR 234 ( about USD 295 ) for them, for maybe ( ?? ) the same bottles at the upper shelf. Same dust etc. as previous years. Old rare bottles ?? No way........

No tourist , of course, would buy these bottles just for fun. They buy max 5 year old, or most of all wicker bottles.

A serious madeira-collector, with all normal senses intact, would laugh and even walk to OVERPRICED MWC and buy a Leacock 1934 B FOR € 237.5 or Cossart Gordon 1934 V for EUR 241. At least you then will get a nice wooden box and a certificate from MWC in addition. Elegant wrapping, and very, very nice wines.

I bought myself a few of them from MWC, years I miss in my collection. At the airport. Nov. 6th we will have the same rules in Europe as US about bring bottles onboard. Ooouuch......

The serious collectors will continue to Diogo's and D'Oliveira and buy much better and older wine for a much less price.

Same as you guys in the US do at RWC..

I just looked at Broadbentwines again. Price of the 1964 Boal has now risen to 690.95 up from 419.95 when I started the thread ! In the meantime stocks have fallen from 14.000 to 7.000.

in the US... Something I really got wrong ?

Or the other side. For the price of 6 bottles from Broadbent you can get at least a roundtripticket to Madeira, a week at Savoy, lot of pocketmoney and still
enough left to buy 12 bottles of another good madeira wine from the sixties down there and bring home........
