Hi-
Perhaps I'm too suspicious but wondering why this is only $19.99...
FTLOP reviewed it and gave it an "89". Ferreira is, as I understand it, a highly reputable port house.
What's the catch here?

I cannot say there is "a catch". I've purchased from them several times and am always pleased--bottles have always showed nicely. They never seem to have outstanding ports, but good ones and always with a great price (I've got in the past Broadbent VP, Ferriera VP, Quinta do Crasto LBVs and perhaps a few others I cannot recall). I know, VP for $20 is just crazy, even at 89 points.

They might offer it again. They are probably just reducing their stock or got a great buy. Their last two Port offers have both been Broadbent imports, which I think is interesting. Just for the record, everything I've bought from them has been in perfect shape.

I don't think there is a catch either. Ferriera is highly reputable, and a lot of people around here rave about their tawnies. But they aren't what I would consider top tier for VP. Would you pay $80 for a Ferriera VP on release? I wouldn't. But I would easily pay $20 or $30, and I'd consider paying up to $50 depending on the vintage, experience, reviews etc.

Next Wednesday, the 19th WTSO will have Cheapskate Wednesday with a new wine every 15 minutes. It seems its often mostly a rehash of what they recently offered--so you might get a second chance at this plus the Broadbent (if they have any left).

Also, from my notes, they had the 2003 Ferreira last time for $25/bottle.

Mine as well. They don't offer Port very often, but my wife and I buy a lot of "bargain" red wines and bubblies from WTSO and I don't recall ever having had a bad bottle.

That's two 2003's I've missed now. Always try to catch these, since it's my anniversary year.

Steve if you want the ones I ordered you're welcome to them. I don't really have room to store them, but I just couldn't pass up that screamin' deal.

Thanks Glenn,

I may take you up on that. Or maybe a couple if you'd like to hold a couple yourself.

However many you would like is fine. I'll just drink them instead of LBVs if you don't take 'em. :winepour:

Dear Dr. Herzenstube,

Often times when a new vintage is on the way, a producer might feel like clearing out some Port that is taking up space or tying up cash flow. The same goes for the inventory of an importer on occasion and it really doesn't have to coincide with the release of a new vintage, that is just one possibility.

However, WTSO has a great reputation, so I would not feel that anyone need be concerned about the provenance of Ports they are selling.

BTW, if they charged $39.99 instead, would you then have felt better about making the buy vs. passing on it? Some would think that would be akin to passing on a painting at auction because it was $25,000, but had it gone for a cool quarter of a million bucks, they'd have raised their paddle in an instant. Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com

Ah... but it all depends on the provenance and the seller. The painting that comes from a known forger or from an auction house that tends to sell shoddy, retounched paintings will not be able to get that quarter million. I know sellars that specialize in salvaged wines, but I won't buy from them unless it's almost free. I know auction houses that sold obviously forged DRC. Sometimes WTSO (and cinderella wine as well) can look like that type of operation based on price, but they aren't! Since Dr. Herzenstube did not know the seller, it was certainly a fair question.
