KOPKE is the oldest Port house in existence, dating back to 1638. We are humbled by this truly astounding collection we have purchased, at INCREDIBLE PRICES. Prepare to be blown away!
Dear Oenophile,
http://offers.bpwine.com/t/r-l-nlddtyk-jhkhtjihll-y/
Somewhere on the Western edge of America lies a simple, ubiquitous and utterly common large metal warehouse. The temperature is kept at 60 degrees, and inside these cases, bottles (in original boxes, even!!) have been resting, ignored, unnoticed and passed over for at least the last 3-8 years. And then we showed up.
This is a truly amazing batch of wine. These Ports were already built for the long haul, but to find them so literally undisturbed for so long is a rare thing. Needless to say, there is a style, a format, a vintage and a price for everyone here. We have used our friend, client and all-around world-class Port expert Roy Hersh, from Washington State, as our official critic and commentator here - if you are a Port person, there is no better place to get expert info than his website- fortheloveofport.com. Check it out!
A bit about Kopke: Established in 1638 by German diplomat Cristiano Kopke, the house of Kopke is universally recognized as the first Port wine export company in history. Their award winning wines are produced with grapes from their famous Quinta Sao Luiz, one of the most prestigious vineyards in the Douro region. Their traditional harvesting and production methods, along with their hand-stenciled bottles, express Kopke's dedication to quality, craftsmanship and heritage.
So, here it is - as usual with these types of things, it is FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED. In stock!!
One last note: We're assuming most of our customers are familiar with types and styles of port. If you are...you can skip this short primer. For those still learning...read on. (this will only take a minute, we promise!)
Tawny Port - a basic blended port, like Ruby, which is given more ageing in the barrel before being bottled. The extra ageing, which can be anything from 3 to 40 years, causes the wine to take on a Red-Brown colour and develops a dry nutty flavour with raisin overtones.
Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) is wine from a single specific harvest, the year being stated on the label, which has been aged in the barrel for between 4 and 6 years. LBV's are more complex than a Premium Ruby but are softer and more readily approachable than the Full Vintage. Late Bottled Vintage is intended to be drunk earlier, and does not have the ageing potential of a Full Vintage.
Single Quinta Port - made from a single specific harvest, and coming from a single specific estate or Quinta. Probably the next best thing to a Full Vintage . Aged and bottled as a Full Vintage Port, the wines are ready to drink on release but will age further in bottle, throwing the classic sediment.
Colheita - Essentially a Tawny Port made from a single specific harvest, unlike the Tawny which is a blend of several different years harvests. The year of harvest will be stated on the label along with the year of bottling and a statement that the wine has been given extended ageing in wood. Colheita's are aged in the barrel for a minimum of seven years so that their colour fades and they take on a nutty flavour, which should finish with lingering rich dried fruit overtones.
Vintage Port - The most famous of all Port categories, sitting at the top of the tree, the King of all Ports, is the Full Vintage. The product of a single harvest the wine is aged in barrel for between 2 and 3 years and is bottled un-filtered, and needs to be laid down for a considerable number of years so that it can age in bottle. After ageing in bottle Vintage Port develops into a very big wine, exhibiting a range of flavours depending on the maker, the year, the climate etc. and only made when the harvest is considered "exceptional". Only about 1% or 2% of all Port produced is worthy of being called Vintage, and the reputations of the makers can be made or broken on the quality of their Vintage offerings.

Re: KOPKE from BP
Not as good at the FTLOP buying opportunity (e.g. the 1967 colheita), but still some good deals there. I think I may have to buy a few.
