Lots at the November Zachy's online auction

Post by Eric Menchen »

There are quite a few listings for Port and Madeira in this month Zachy's online auction. At the moment I've only bid on:
Lot 515 10 375ml Dow Vintage 1980
Lot 564 1 750ml Burmester Novidade 1922
But there were lots of other tempting bottles out there, 1970s, 1977, 1985 ...
If I bid on additional lots, I'll post here. And if other FTLOPers post here, I won't bid against you. But if I don't see anything here in a few days, I may outbid some of the existing bids.

Hmmm, might be interested in the Welsh Bros bottles if the price stays low. Thanks for the heads up.

I was looking at those too. Compiling my own spreadsheet now to figure out what else to bid on. I was already outbid on a d'Yquem.

I've so far bid on:
515 (outbid, bummer, but not going higher as it approaches retail prices),
516,
548 (outbid),
564,
608 (outbid),
706,
837,
911,
1013

I'll probably bid on those Fonseca magnums if I don't hear from any FTLOPers, and a few more of the lots like 911 and 917, maybe 705, 709, 916 ...

Update: Put in a bid on 516, the 1985 Fonseca magnum; and 911, 1970 Fonseca.

Update: Outbid on the 1980 Dow, so 917 is looking more likely to get a bid from me. Also there is some CdP and Recioto I might bid on.

Heads up that their Holiday Auction is also open.
There are a number of interesting lots (some of them fairly large). Plenty of 1963 bottles, some from before.
One of the lots is a bottle of Scion (lot 1147).

Am likely to put a bid on 1041. No bids on it so far.
Will likely hold off until close to the end.

I was outbid on the four bottles of 1970 Fonseca, so I put in a bid on a full case. If I win one, and someone wants to split it, let me know. I also just put a bid in on lot 916.

I'd split part of a case of F70. I was thinking of bidding on one, but didn't really want that many.

And wow is their website slow right now...

???

When I bid, they were all showing no bids... I saw your post, but since there were no bids on it I thought you'd decided not to bid. :(

Though that might explain why I had to "outbid" the minimum bid that was displayed. We must have placed our bids at almost the same time, so I never saw yours displayed. I've never used Zachy's before so wasn't sure how it all worked. :(

For all the auctions they do, Zachy's website and online bidding system is one of the worst I could imagine. Slow, confusing, pathetic really.

Their system is messed up... they log you out all the time, logging in is a pain and the quotes are often stale.

Anyway, if you'd be ok w it we could split it at the price you paid, provided it could be arranged w Zachys - in the past they've come across pretty flexible...

I've been annoyed by having to log back in, but I haven't experienced the stale quotes thing. In fact, I noticed that when pages were loading in my browser that it would flash away and come back with a different bid while the load was happening. After the page was fully loaded, I didn't see updates, nor did I expect to.

I really wish they had a "watch" feature. I found it tedious to keep looking up lots I had not bid on to see what was happening.

And once long ago I remember a way I could enter multiple lots or a range and get them to all show up, but I haven't managed to do this lately. If you could do this, that would somewhat alleviate the need for a "watched lots" feature.

I see that 1042 and 1043 were passed. Perhaps call Zachy's and see if you can buy one of those.

I was going to suggest the same thing. I'm sure they'd be happy to sell another lot, and you'd get it cheaper than what I paid!

I saw this and wondered what it was. When I saw the weird flashing, nothing changed that I noticed so I thought it was just poor website design.

Once it fully loaded, though, there was no more flashing. So at that point the quotes could have become stale.
Eric Menchen wrote:I really wish they had a "watch" feature. I found it tedious to keep looking up lots I had not bid on to see what was happening.
Agreed. There were several that I was watching and I kept having to close the window, go back to Zachys.com/auctions, re-filter for Portugal, and then scan all the lots again.

This was further compounded by the slowness of their website on Sunday. At one point it took me 20 minutes to log in and look at the Port lots. That was at 5:20 pm (ending at about 5:40 pm), and the auction was closing at 6:00! As I recall that was about the time that I said screw it and just went ahead and placed a few bids. I was worried that if I waited any longer I'd miss out due to their slow website.

2 of my 3 bids weren't sufficient even though I'd overbid... the 3rd went through (1041) but for the full amount that I'd bid and not the minimum bid.

(Overbidding is a trick I've learned when sniping... it helps you get the lot if multiple people are all trying to snipe it at once.)
