An assortment of Ports for sale

Post by Roy Hersh »

The extreme age-worthiness of Port makes it the perfect beverage to celebrate special anniversaries or milestones. Even better, it is a remarkable value in fine wine, as many excellent bottles can be found for double-digit prices instead of triple.

Take advantage of cold weather and a warm fire, and open a bottle of Port this month. Whether paired with cheese or chocolate desserts, or sipped on its own, Port is the perfect accompaniment to a relaxing evening.

We especially recommend:

2011 Niepoort - Bioma Vinha Velha Vintage Port (95 JS) *Ships 1-2 Weeks* – “Concentrated fruit here with a super-refined tannin backbone. Full body, medium sweet, highly toned with stones and minerals. This is beautiful, rich and muscular all at the same time. Only 450 cases produced of this foot-trodden wine from old vines aged three years in oak pipes. Drink in 2020.” – James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com

2003 Noval - Vintage Port (96+ RH) – “Opaque purplish ruby hue. This 2003 stallion is a great modern day version of Noval’s renaissance since its purchase by AXA ten years prior to this harvest. Sweet scents of flowers, cocoa powder and cassis leap from the glass. Texturally pleasing with an impressive viscous presence accessorized by dark cherry and blackberry flavors which are ripe and abundant. The no nonsense tannins show that this will be a long lived VP and will be best served after long cellaring. It is easy to approach now but its best years are a few decades down the road. 6,000 cases produced. Drink 2015-2045.” – Roy Hersh, For The Love of Port

2009 Taylor's - Vintage Port (97 WA) – “Now with a couple years in bottle, I am erring to the Taylor’s over the Fonseca (although these can always change!) The Taylor’s show more delineation and refinement with pure black currant, cassis, pencil box, hints of marzipan and a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is full-bodied and sumptuous with super-fine tannins, very pure blackberry and boysenberry notes interlaced with cedar, dried fig and a touch of black pepper on the beautifully refined finish. Excellent.” – NEAL MARTIN, Wine Advocate
