Quinta do Infantado 2000 Vintage Porto

Post by johnleeiii »

All,

Came across this in a local shop, and not having heard of it, paused....

Can anyone share their thoughts on this Port? It had the following review posted about it:

THE WINE SPECTATOR 91 points: "Excellent, generous young Port. Fantastic aromas of crushed berries, licorice and flowers. Full-bodied, thick and rich with lovely fruit and soft, yet powerful tannins. Very long. Best after 2007. 1,100 cases made."

Many like the style of Infantado but I'm not one of those. Infantado is vinifying its port as semi-dry Port. The results is a Port that because there is much less sugar than others, you feel more the spicy powerful tannins and less the round, rich, ounctuous and sticky jammyness of regular Vintage Port.

Worth trying though but not buying at the cases in my opinion. For your information, the son of the owner at Infantado is now producing semi-dry port too under the name Roseira & Ricou

I just opened a bottle of this tonight. This post made me seek out an Infantado as I'm a big fan of reds with lots of good spices, so I figured why not see what a port with big spices is like. I decanted it for 2 hours before I tried it.

The color is deep, deep, dark purple, and lightening only slightly at the edges. Its fairly thick and syrupy, leading to plenty of slow tears dripping down the glass. There is almost no nose on this wine, but I can smell a bit of sweet blackberry and chocolate. Right off the bat, there is a flood of flavor. An amazing mix of acidity, sweet dark berries, spices and pepper. An amazing mix. Not too sweet, and a bit dry, which sounds fairly characteristic to Infantado (this is my first).
Thanks, John C

My last VP before I started my project was the enjoyable 1992 Quinta do Infantado VP which will be in my next newsletter's TN section. Nice juice and I have had some very enjoyable Infantado but they were not a consistent producer of quality VP until the 1990s.
